Another short but brilliant week in Year 3!

In Maths this week, we continued developing our number sense and explored different ways of partitioning numbers. We used Dienes and place value counters to represent numbers and deepen our understanding of the value of each digit. We also continued to practise our 2, 5 and 10 times tables, helping us to become more confident and fluent with our multiplication facts.

In English, we used The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark as inspiration to write senses poems about fireworks. We began by exploring what we might see, hear, smell, feel and even taste when watching fireworks. We then developed our ideas using vivid verbs and enriched language to make our writing more exciting. We also incorporated alliterative phrases to add further detail and creativity to our poems.

In Science, we continued our work on forces through an exciting experiment with the Year 5 children. We also continued designing and creating our parachutes, thinking carefully about how we could change different features to investigate which parachute will fall most slowly when we drop them outside the window!

In Humanities, we used atlases to develop our understanding of latitude and longitude. We practised using these geographical coordinates to locate different countries around the world.

Dear Parents,

We have had another lovely, busy and productive week in Year 3! The children have continued to work incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum and have enjoyed exploring lots of exciting new learning.

In Science, we began learning about forces. We specifically looked at the difference between pushes and pulls and explored how forces can be used to make objects move, change direction or stop. The children enjoyed identifying examples of pushes and pulls in everyday life and developing their understanding of how forces work.

In Maths, we continued our work on number sense, with a particular focus on place value. We have been developing the children's understanding of ones, tens and hundreds and how the position of a digit determines its value within a number. We have also continued to practise our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We would like the children to become really secure and confident with these multiplication facts before we move on to learning the 3 times table, so please continue to practise these at home whenever possible.

In English, we were introduced to the wonderful story The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. The children have been enjoying getting to know Plop, the little owl who is afraid of the dark. We focused on persuasive writing and wrote persuasive pieces aimed at convincing Plop that the dark is not something to be afraid of. The children worked hard to use persuasive language and provide convincing reasons to change Plop's mind.

In Computing, we had great fun taking part in a Quiz Club quiz. The children absolutely loved the opportunity to test their knowledge, answer questions and work together. It was a fantastic way to develop their digital skills while also encouraging teamwork and problem-solving.

It has been wonderful to see the children settling so well into Year 3 and becoming increasingly confident in their learning. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and effort they are showing each day and are looking forward to another exciting week ahead!

This week, we introduced the children to a new book called The Quest. This is a very special book as it contains no words and tells its story entirely through pictures. This provided the children with a wonderful opportunity to use their imagination and creativity as they explored the story and developed their own interpretations.

Throughout the week, the children made predictions about what they thought might happen, wrote character descriptions and developed detailed setting descriptions. On Thursday, they were given the opportunity to imagine that they could go on their own quest. They thought carefully about where they would go, what might happen along the way and what exciting discoveries they might make. It was fantastic to see the children sharing such imaginative and creative ideas.

In Maths, we have been developing our number sense. We reviewed place value, focusing on the ones and tens digits, before moving on to explore hundreds. The children have been building their understanding of how numbers are composed and representing numbers in different ways.

This week has also been an important one for developing our digital skills. We spent several lessons getting our iPads organised and learning how to use Google Classroom. The children had the opportunity to practise accessing and navigating the platform, which will support them throughout the year.

In Art, we have also begun exploring different types of sketching. The children have been learning about a variety of sketching techniques and beginning to develop their skills through practical activities.

It has been a lovely first full week in Year 3, and the Year 3 team have been extremely impressed with how positively the children have settled into their new routines. They have shown enthusiasm, creativity and a wonderful attitude towards their learning, and we are very excited for the year ahead.

Welcome back everybody!

Our first two days in our new classroom have been absolutely brilliant, and the children have settled in incredibly well. There is already a wonderful, happy buzz in the room as everyone adjusts to being the leaders of the school.

We kicked off our first morning by catching up and sharing all our fantastic stories from the summer holidays. It was lovely to hear about all the adventures, family time, and relaxing things the children got up to over the break.

To help brighten up our school and celebrate our unique personalities, we spent some time drawing self-portraits. The creativity on display has been outstanding, and these will soon be proudly displayed in the corridors for everyone to see.

It has been a fantastic start to year 3 and we are so proud of how maturely the children have returned.

Important Reminders for Next Week:

• PE Days: Our outdoor and indoor PE sessions will take place on Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their full, correct school PE kit on these days.
• Meet the Teacher: Don't forget our parent meeting this Tuesday 8th September at 6:45pm. We look forward to seeing you there to discuss the Year 6 curriculum, expectations, and upcoming events.
